BOS1 Sharing of Innovative Teaching and Learning
From the Global Goals to Globalisation: why and how global learning and the Global Learning Programme is enhancing learning and innovative teaching across the South West.

This session is aimed at anyone interested in finding out more about how global learning is enhancing learning and creating spaces for innovative practice in schools. Over 5,500 schools in England have registered on the government-funded Global Learning Programme (www.glp-e.org.uk), many from the South West.
Global Learning is being interpreted in many ways. We will share case studies of practice and impact, including activities in South Dartmoor Community College and its neighbouring schools who have run successful ‘Global Awareness Days’ and ‘Refugee’ themed activities. The session will also be of interest to those wanting to find out more about globally themed CPD, KS2 KS3 transition, and school-networking.
BOS2 Workload Reduction Research Grant
Innovative interdisciplinary research project to investigate whether some of the principles which underpin the medical profession’s approach to using data can be applied in schools.

This session will give an overview of the Workload Challenge Project. The aim of the project is for the research to lead to a reduction in the participant teachers’ workloads by empowering them to do something different in their approach to data within their schools.
The session will look at the findings mid-way through the six month project and look at how it can reach its ultimate goal – to foster an atmosphere where data motivates change.

How can we use cognitive science to make learning durable?

This session looks at how teachers can utilise cognitive science to increase the ‘stickability’ of learning. The application of cognitive science to education is of increasing interest to teachers, for example with the work of Daniel Willingham, Peter Brown, and Benedict Carey. At the Woodroffe School we have been exploring differing approaches on how to incorporate retrieval, spaced practice, interleaving and generation into our teaching; this session aims to explore these strategies and share examples of best practice from a range of subjects.

BOS5 The First 100 Days of Headship
Overview from the new Head of School at Axe Valley Academy and the integration of the new Academy

As a concept, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous ‘First 100 Days’ has been taken up by a range of authors on leadership and has recently been ‘Trumped’ by the discussion regarding the building of a wall between Mexico and the US. There is no doubt however that the first few months of a new headship are pivotal to its long term success. In this session I will be presenting a personal and candid summary of the highlights and challenges for a new Headteacher in a rapidly changing educational landscape. I will explain what I have learnt and discuss the strategies that I have employed to become established in a new school. This session is aimed at anyone who may be considering headship in the future and might also be of interest to those embarking on partnership working, converting to academy status or becoming part of an emerging multi academy trust.
BOS6 Editing and Feedback for Improving Writing
Innovative findings for improving primary aged children’s ability to edit their own writing.

This session is aimed at anyone seeking to find a more manageable way to provide children with effective feedback in English whilst reducing teacher workload and written marking. In March 2016, the DfE published the initial findings of the working review group on reducing teacher workload around marking. The Redstart Learning Partnership have been trialling new ways to improve children’s ability to edit their own writing, whilst seeking to find quick, easy and effective ways to mark children’s work. Online feedback has been trialled for children in Year 5/6 and the initial results have been very promising.
