Before you decide whether the Jurassic Coast Teaching Schools’ Alliance School Direct training placements are the right ITT route for you, it is important to know that the alliance do not offer Skype/video conferencing interviews. All interview dates have been set in advance and are as follows:

The Alliance (JCTSA) is a fantastic partnership in which to work and learn. It provides an exceptional school based learning opportunity in collaboration with The University of Exeter. It is an inspirational partnership of over 30 schools, many of which have achieved an Outstanding Ofsted rating, as has our accrediting provider – The University of Exeter.

The relationship with The University of Exeter has been developed over a number of years and the JCTSA use the Exeter model of reflective practice, with the addition of enhanced personalised school based work, to ensure that all trainees are fully equipped for employment.

Schools within the JCTSA have worked with trainee teachers for many years and we fully recognise how much vibrancy, enthusiasm and drive they can offer to a school community.

The JCTSA is led by The Woodroffe School and comprises a mixture of large and small, primary and secondary schools across Devon, Dorset and Somerset. This provides a unique opportunity to experience a diverse and contrasting range of teaching and learning experiences.

Our staff are our most valuable resource and have a proven track record in training and professional development. Our teachers are excellent practitioners and are eager to share their skills, knowledge and practice with the next generation of teachers.

About this training programme

Successful applicants will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning. School Direct trainees will be assigned two mentors from the staff of their Home schools, one from the subject/phase and one from outside the subject/phase, to act as key supporters in the training and development. School Direct trainees will be in school from the first day of the school year in September to ensure they will feel part of the team from day one.

Our mentors are outstanding teachers. They are required to undertake a rigorous training programme to develop their mentoring skills. This includes coaching, effective classroom observation and feedback skills.

School Direct trainees will spend September in the Home schools which will enable them to see how the school year starts. During October they will be required to spend the majority of each week at The University of Exeter following their taught @Exeter programme. This will vary for each subject course. The remainder of the week will be spent in their subject/phase at the Home schools.

About this training provider

Accommodation: The JCTSA does not offer accommodation for any School Direct trainees. It will be the responsibility of the trainee to provide their own accommodation.

There is a good range of rental accommodation available at reasonable rates.

Bursary Support: There are Bursaries available for a number of School Direct subjects. The Bursary awarded is dependent on the subject and each candidate’s class of Degree.

Fees: The tuition fee for The University of Exeter School Direct students for the PGCE programme is £9,250. The tuition fee for Channel Island/Isle of Man students is £9,250. The tuition fee for International students is £16,500.

It is important to note that the JCTSA partner schools are in rural locations and some distance from other JCTSA schools and The University of Exeter. Although public transport is available, it is limited.

Entry requirements:

Degree – Applicants should be a graduate with a minimum of a 2:1, although in some subject areas we are willing to consider applicants who have a 2:2 who can demonstrate a real aptitude for teaching.

The JCTSA would prefer the Degree course to be related to the subject application.

GCSE – The minimum requirement at GSCE is as follows:

Secondary –

Mathematics Grade B or above
English Grade B or above

Primary –

Mathematics Grade B or above
English Grade B or above
Science Grade C or above

Please note: The minimum GCSE Grades reflect the minimum entry requirements of our accrediting provider. However, in line with the NCTL minimum requirements we are willing to consider Secondary applicants who have C Grades in Mathematics and English who can demonstrate a real aptitude for teaching.

Other requirements: The JCTSA will only consider applications from applicants who possess the necessary GCSE qualifications at the time of application.

The JCTSA would prefer the applicant to have some experience, and be able to provide evidence of working with children and/or within a school environment. However this is not an obligatory requirement.

Applicants applying for the School Direct programme will need to pass Professional Skills Tests in both Literacy and Numeracy before starting their School Direct course. The JCTSA expects all applicants to have registered/booked onto these prior to submitting their application.

What are we looking for: We are looking for ambitious trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about teaching and have a desire to share that with young people of all abilities across primary and secondary ages.

This will be demonstrated by meaningful experience of working with young people. This does not need to be paid work but might be helping with a sports team, drama group or youth club. Reflection on your experience of working alongside young people should form a major part of your application.

How we select our trainees: The Woodroffe Schools is the Lead School for the JCTSA and will be co-ordinating the recruitment process. It is a rigorous and thorough process designed to ensure the best matches for applicants and Home schools.

Each candidate shortlisted for interview will be notified directly through UCAS.

If candidates are notified that they have been successful in securing an interview they will be required to visit the Home school prior to the interview. If this visit has not taken place before the interview date, the interview will be cancelled and candidates will be notified of rejection through UCAS.

Interviews will be held at one of the alliance Home schools. The interview programme will include working in class with groups of students, observing a lesson and reflecting on it prior to a formal interview, a short written task and the opportunity to talk to staff and students. Staff from the Home school will be involved in the interview process.
